I had to share these pics. I was in the shop cutting wood and my dog was making a fuss outside so I had to see what was going on. This is what I found in the bushes. They sure are cute when they're this small.

Tastes like chicken.....just kidding

Actually opossums are not bad to have around. They clean up the neighborhood, and entertain the dogs and cats. If we could only teach them to stay out of garbage cans.....

This will probably only make any sense if you're a diehard Simpsons fan:

Marge: Homer, there's a family of possums in here.
Homer: I call the big one "Bitey."

Those are some fearsome beasts; I'd recount the story but it's a little gory
for Lance's appropriateness test.

I think they're cute...except for the tail...
We have one that comes around and eats the food I put out for my outdoor cat. Sometimes he hangs out in the basement window-well while I'm working in the shop. He just hangs there and watches me. Nice kitty!

Another Simpsons fan! Can't believe I have been watching that show for almost 20 years.

Steve,

Was Mom there to keep you from playing with the babies? They can be a nasty critter.

I pulled one about that size out of the skimmer last summer. Water everywhere and they have to drink out of the pool?

They're cool to have around, but, it is a little disturbing, to see what one thinks is a giant rat, running through the back yard, until you catch on!

I realize you were prolly kidding around,
From what I understand they are actually predators of songbirds{eating eggs}, amphibians, and other woodland ceratures, creatures I happen to adore.
They never used to be in Ontario Can where I grew up, I used to hunt raccoons for pelts. They werent there at first, but when I was getting older and setting my mind toward leaving the province, they {possums} were just arriving on the scene, hitching rides in transport trailers and 5th wheels and such.
I would wipe them off the face of the earth if there was only a button. I blew away as many as I saw while hunting, but there just isnt enough ammunition to get em all.
Possums, really an intrinsic part of a certain habitat - but thier range has far outgrown thier usefulness in respect to thier role in nature.
Again maily our fault as humans, as always.
cheers

Little-known fact:

The Opossum is the only marcupial indigenous to the North American continent.

There. Now your lives are enriched for the gaining of the knowledge.

Charlie: I hear what you're saying, but it's a giant balancing act run by something bigger than You or I. Preditors and prey. I have a bird feeder outside my shop and once in a while ..not often the neighborhood coopers hawk will grab one from my feeder. It's sad I guess, but the hawk is just doing his job.

Hey Charlie,

If you replace the word "possums" in that statement with "Ovations" you would have been doing the world a real favour

Cheers

only one species of opossum... there are many other species living around the world...
Since they were introduced to New Zealand theyve been a major problem as they are mowing our native forests down at a rate of knots.
What kind of effect do they have in america on forests? , i think they are so devastating here because there are pretty much no predators to keep them down.

but yeh cute pics!

There's three things in life that are nearly impossible to get over.

The first is havin' loved and lost.....

The second is eatin' bad possum......

The third is eatin' good possum.
